This months devotion by Al Long: If you look outside, you can see that we are in the middle of winter. The leaves are off the trees and the trees look as if they are dying. However, an old country preacher once said that a tree in the middle of winter is growing stronger, because it's roots grow bigger and go deeper into the ground. If they are growing stronger in the winter, I believe we too should grow stronger during the trials of our life. This reminds me of a hymn on page 30 of the old Broadman Hymnal, "Stand By Me". It goes like this: "When storms of life are raging, stand by me. When the world is tossing me like a ship upon the sea, thou who rulest wind and water, stand by me." Other verses say in the midst of tribulation, in the midst of faults and failures, in the midst of persecution, stand by me. The last verse is my favorite: "When I'm growing old and feeble, stand by me. When my life becomes a burden, and I'm nearing chilly Jordan, O Thou 'Lily of the Valley' stand by me". He is the lily that is in the valley of life when we feel that no one cares, that we are all alone, and everything seems to go against us. Just remember that if you are a Christian, then Jesus is with you through all of your trials, sickness, loneliness, pain, loss of a loved one, and all of the other hardships of life that you must face. Hebrews 13:5 ... For He hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
